LEADERSHIP UPDATE of the Southeast Region

Volume 4, Issue 8                                                                                                                                September 2009

Pastors: Please distribute this to your delegates, leaders & congregation

“GETTING  RID  OF  CLUNKERS”

Cash for Clunkers – I’m sure you heard about it, and maybe you even participated in it. The massive CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) government program offered customers a $3,500 - $4,500 discount if they would trade in their old, gas guzzling, fume spewing vehicle and purchase a new, environmentally friendly vehicle. It was a win – win:

·         Consumers got a huge discount on a new car, truck or leased vehicle

·         The program energized the economy, boosting auto sales

·         Safer, cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles now impact our environment

I’ve been wondering lately if “clunkers” exist in places other than our garages or driveways. I imagine we’ve got some “clunker programs” in our churches as well - events that we continue to hang on to, repeating year after year, which have lost their effectiveness. As we begin a new school year, many ministries at church start up. Before we automatically repeat the same programs as last year, we need to pause and step back. I challenge each pastor and leadership team to evaluate the productivity of their proposed events and programs for the coming school year as part of their Trimester On Purpose Process discussion:

·         Are you resuming any programs based more on nostalgic memories than current need?

·         Have any ministries become “fuelish,” taking too much money or manpower to maintain?

·         How are your events affecting your “environment” – is there evidence / fruit that they are still effectively impacting today’s culture and those who live nearby?

Many times in order to START doing new creative ministries, we need to first STOP doing those programs which were originally productive, but which have become less effective over time. Let’s appreciate the past, but not live there.

Like Paul, let’s keep moving forward: “I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward – to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back. So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us.” Message, Phil 3:12

                                                               Supt/ Darrel Riley

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MESSAGES: Bishop Roller’s FM 3.0 and Supt Riley’s Rip the Roof messages are available in CD & DVD. If you have not yet gotten a copy to share with your congregation this fall, contact the Rileys.

TELL US YOUR “NEW OPENINGS”: Supt. Riley is keeping a listing – church by church in each conference – of new ministries being created. Let’s reach the goal of creating 100 new openings to get people to Jesus this fall. Send him a listing of your new ventures now!

TRIMESTER ON PURPOSE FORMS are DUE in SEPTEMBER:  Pastors, delegates & church leaders – it’s time to sit down together and prayerfully complete the Trimester On Purpose Form for the summer months of May – August. Keep a copy for your records, and give a copy to your District Leader in early September. The Trimester Form is available in English, Spanish or Portuguese (at the www.seregionfmc.org website, under the Forms & Resources tab, or contact your DL).

INWARDLY  HEALTHY and OUTWARDLY  FOCUSED

Foundation #4:  EVERY  PERSON  A  PASSIONATE  PRAY-ER

Pray daily for the following churches and pastors, that they will be creating new openings. Send greetings to one another. When you are the prayer focus, please contact the Rileys to share your personal & church prayer requests.
